Shepard Fairey x Glen E. Friedman MCA Tribute

To honor the late Adam Yauch aka MCA of the Beastie Boys, Shepard Fairey has created several tributes to the hip-hop pioneer. Appearing in a number of locations across Los Angeles, the billboards make use of a Glen E. Friedman photo alongside art clearly inspired by the Beasties’ 1986 debut Licensed to Ill. Fairey’s MCA pieces can be seen at Sunset and Las Palmas and on Fairfax Avenue in LA.

In December 2008, graffiti writers AUGOR and REVOK modified a billboard advertising the wonderful Takashi Murakami exhibit at the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art. Two days later, the billboard was removed. The LA Weekly reported that Murakami himself saw online photos of the graffitied billboard and thought it to be “so wonderful, he had to have it for his collection,” according to his representatives. So apparently he had it taken down and shipped to his studio in Japan.
